Saudi officials said on November 21 that Inter Miami will play in the Riyadh Season Cup, a statement they verified on Monday. Inter Miami claimed at the time that the reports were false.
On Monday, though, the Major League Soccer squad declared that they would take on Al-Hilal on January 29 and Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr team on February 1. The Saudi Pro League is led by Inter Miami’s two rivals, with Ronaldo leading the way in scoring.
“These matches will present an important test for our team, benefiting us in the upcoming season,” stated Chris Henderson, sporting director of Inter Miami. We are eager to play against elite teams in our league, such as Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr.”
Messi and Ronaldo have played each other 35 times in club and international competitions during the last few years. Teams led by Messi have won 16 times, teams led by Ronaldo have won 10, and there have been nine draws between the two groups. In those games, Messi has tallied 21 goals and 12 assists, while Ronaldo has 20 goals and one assist.
In February Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr will play against Argentina’s World Cup winner, Lionel Messi. The summer relocation of the Major League Soccer franchise to Saudi Arabia has increased traveler numbers in the country. Messi’s old team, Paris Saint-Germain, banned him from taking unofficial domestic trips in May. This year, he participated in the Riyadh Season Cup as well, winning 5-4 against the SPL All-Stars squad.
Saudi Arabia has signed some of the biggest players in international football as part of its massive efforts. But Messi chose Major League Soccer (MLS) over the oil-rich state when he left PSG at the end of the previous campaign.
During their peak years at Barcelona and Real Madrid, Messi and Ronaldo—widely regarded as the two greatest players of all time—competed against one another for the most coveted football prizes.
Four preseason games have already been announced by Inter Miami. The first is on January 19 against El Salvador’s national team, and the second is on February 4 against a team of elite players from Hong Kong. It is anticipated that the MLS season will begin at the end of February.
